Upon arriving in Tofino you are on Tofino Time—described as
"half the speed twice the pleasure."
Tofino-Don't expect a map of the surf. The breaks are nestled in coves crooks and crannies of islands surrounded by Clayoquot Sound.
The road to Tofino, BC.
A community that spent their main fundraising efforts to build a skate park, which opened July 2005. The lines the "New Line Crew" built for Tofino are endless. The crew spent the summer enjoying Tofino, its waves, and all it has to offer, while proclaiming the Tofino park as the "Holy Grail" of skate park jobs. Active living is a priority to this town.
Why Tofino?
I packed my bags, waited all day. Sitting at the ferry terminal the next bus comes in four hours. 100 pounds of luggage and 30c, I wait and realized I dreamt of this place. I knew nothing about it, but the knowledge from brochures I grabbed on the ferry here.
This place that I knew nothing about would one day know me so well, it would inspire me with its untimely beauty and tranquility to become the person I've always tried to be. Reminding its visitors to relax and breathe. Enjoy the moment and the surroundings, although these ideals are easily forgotten as soon as you leave this place. This town nestled in the mountains and islands of Clayoquot Sound at the end of the road would become my home and my soul mate.
It sounds ridiculous, like someone slipped me some pills on the way or something. But you would only believe it if you see it. And not all who make the two hour ferry ride and three hour drive from Vancouver would see it anyway. Your state of mind has to be there and open to it. You will never get so wrapped up in a place or a moment in time, unless you breathe and see it for what it is.
Long Beach Surf Shop- Best Shop in town. The sign on the door says,
"Gone Surfin. Be back later."
The people of Tofino add to its unique atmosphere. Active and open minded a true Tofitian can handle the strongest storm, busiest grocery line-up (in summer), and most beautiful sunrise all in one day. The Tofician is an active member in the community ensuring their home is well taken care of and protected by overwhelming summer months when the tourist flooding in. Staying true to themselves and the island makes these people and this town a place of envy.
For you will dream about it again and again. It can capture your heart in an instant. And break it just as fast as the ocean grows distant in the beautifully rugged horizon and the frostbitten toes of the prairies keep you awake at night.
Not to mention Tofino and the surrounding islands have some of the only surf breaks in this country I call home. And some of the last temperate rainforest in the world is found there.
